The first three nunbers of your tractor serial number should be 990, so your complete serial number should be 9901078.

Can anyone inform me as to how to tell the year of a Simplicity garden tractor by its serial number? I have a Landlord and a Broadmore I am trying to identify, both are early mesh grill models.

I think this link will help you. http://www.simpletractors.com/Main/made_when.htm They have a lot of Simplicity info as well as some very knowledgeable people in there forums. I found out my Broadmoor 707 was a 1966 model at their site. Manuals and other info can also be found in PDF format at. http://www.simplicitytechpubs.com/techpubsearch.php You will need a Mfg.#, older tractors may only have three numbers; just add 990 to the front. Example 990289 for Broadmoor.
